Through the mentorship of faculty, our orthopaedic surgery residency program offers a resident trainee the opportunity to design a personalized international experience and participate in the practice of global medicine. Now in its second year, the program was designed to complement the research, surgical and didactic components of the resident educational program.
Trainees may elect to participate in experiences that allow them to gain knowledge of the practice of orthopaedic patient care in areas with constrained resources, including limited access to the latest orthopedic technological advances and standards of care.
While others, like Derek Shia, MD (Class of 2007 and current Shoulder & Elbow fellow at Washington U) who traveled to France to learn more about shoulder and elbow surgical techniques, seek out opportunities to participate in international apprenticeships with surgeon-scientists involved in cutting-edge initiatives.
Both paths allow residents to broaden their scope and understanding of global medicine.
